Wednesday, August 29 “Touristing” (Rocío)

I’m spending the day sightseeing and exploring Puebla. My biggest success today was getting to el Zocalo, the city’s central plaza, by public transportation. I took Ruta 3 and transferred to Ruta 35. It sounds easy, but I wish I could explain how fast you have to get on and off the bus. And there are few designated stops so if you don’t yell parada! you’re staying on.

After exploring on my own for a bit, I hopped on a sightseeing bus to get to know the historical center. I don’t normally ride those, but I figured it was a great way to learn some of the rich history and get better acquainted with the city.

I also tried the famous “chile en nogada” which is only available between July and September. These are green chiles stuffed with meat and dried fruit, covered with a creamy walnut sauce and sprinkled with red pomegranate seeds. They are advertised on every restaurant, and everyone said I had to try one! I stopped to eat at a nice restaurant in the heart of the plaza, and the presentation was amazing! Sadly, I did not like it. Puebla is known for its delicious food, so I’ll keep trying their famous dishes- mole poblano and cemitas are at the top of my list.

Now, I’m sitting at La Casa de La Cultura (The House of Culture) which houses the oldest library in the Americas. The library is breath-taking, and I felt like I was on the set of Beauty and the Beast.

Tomorrow, we’re bringing the women from Yo’on Ixim to this area so we can start preparing for the fair. They don’t know how to get to the center using public transportation, so we’re taking a field trip! Wish us luck!
