Tuesday, November 06 “Pit stop in Puebla” Rocío

I left Chiapas on Saturday night after spending two weeks exploring one of my favorite cities (San Cristóbal de las Casas), sleeping in one of my favorite hostels (La Isla) and hanging out with some of my favorite fellow backpackers (Victoria, Tom, Alissa, Vera, Katja and Steph). Originally, my plan was to head straight to Mexico City from Chiapas, but I took a detour so I could see my Yo’on Ixim family one more time!

Seeing the women and students again made me extremely happy. At school yesterday, the kids and I hugged at least one hundred times, and they updated me on the fun activities they’ve been doing at school. The women also showed me the work they’ve been doing, and we laughed like old times.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll catch the bus to Mexico City where I’ll be meeting my best friend, Star! She’s visiting Mexico for the first time, and we’ll have one week together to explore one of the best cities in the world (at least that’s what I hear). I can’t wait to see her and share my country with someone who’s been in my life for about 20 years!

Star is one of the most loyal, loving, genuine and fun people I know, and she has been by my side through thick and thin. She’s the kind of friend everyone wishes they had, and in true Star fashion, she decided to come to Mexico just in time for my 30th birthday! I’m sure we’ll have plenty of stories in the next few days.

Other than cherishing my short time in Puebla and planning for Mexico City, I am keeping up with the midterm elections. I faxed my ballot from Chiapas a few weeks ago, and I encourage everyone to vote! I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for a brighter tomorrow…
