Tuesday, October 16 “Mazunte” Rocío

I made it to Mazunte on Saturday, and I’ve been hanging out by the beach for the last couple of days. I’m staying at a hostel named El Manguito (Little Mango) with about 7 other travelers. It’s a relaxed environment within a 5-minute walk to the beach, and the owners are great! This is a nice, hot place to be for a few days and soak some Vitamin D.

Today I went on a pretty cool ecotour of a lake where we saw iguanas, birds, turtles and crocodiles! I went on the tour with a co-op called Lagarto Real Ventanilla, and their mission is to reforest the manglar trees which have been devastated by hurricanes and tropical storms.

Elián, our guide, took three of us out to Laguna Ventanilla on a rowboat and taught us all about the local ecosystem. The sights and sounds were incredible! We must have seen at least 20 iguanas and 3 large crocodiles, in addition to many birds.

Now, I’m cooling off at the hostel before heading to the beach this afternoon. There is also going to be a party at a restaurant nearby, and there’s word about a DJ coming. That should be a lot of fun!
