Thursday, October 04 “Life Story and Novelas” (Rocío)

There is one thing about Mexican women that I’ve known for a long time, we/they love novelas! I haven’t watched a novela in about 12 years, but I tend to know which ones are on because my mom, cousins and aunts watch them.

As we were sitting around the table making more reusable grocery bags, I asked the women which novelas are currently on TV. Then we brought up novelas from the 1990’s and early 2000’s- novelas that we remember fondly along with their theme song and names of the main characters. We mentioned Esmeralda, La Usurpadora, Amor Real, among others. I confessed that I had a big crush on Fernando Colunga, a very famous Mexican actor, and they all laughed and said they did, too!

These women, most of them younger than me, and I could find many ways to bond despite growing up in different countries, speaking different languages, observing different traditions and having different life experiences. As we joked and reminisced on these memorable fictional love stories, I felt a lightness in the room that filled me with joy.

Later on, as we continued working, I was prompted to share why I was volunteering at Yo’on Ixim. I wasn’t prepared, but I spoke from my heart. With tears in my eyes, I shared the story of my family.

I told the women that my dad was also a migrant worker who left his home to work in a new place. He also struggled and worked tirelessly in search of better opportunities. Like them, he learned a new language and navigated a new culture. Like them, he had the courage to leave everything he loved behind in hope of a brighter future.

I also told them that I am here because of the sacrifices and love that were poured into me. Education changed my life, and I know firsthand the power it has to impact a family and a community. I hope their children also have the opportunity to continue their studies and make all their dreams come true. They deserve that and so much more.
