Sunday, September 30 “Mole Poblano” (Rocío)

Today’s post is all about Puebla’s famous dish, mole! I had it for the first time about 7 hours ago, and I am still thinking about it. And I will probably think about it for a long time!

Mole is a famous Mexican dish that originated in Puebla. It’s a dark sauce that contains about 20 ingredients, including chili peppers, spices and chocolate. I haven’t studied the history of mole, but there are various legends that explain the origins of this delicious dish.

One legend says that nuns from the Convent of Santa Rosa in Puebla de Los Angeles whipped this speciality up in the 16th century when they learned the Archbishop was visiting. They created the sauce by mixing all the ingredients in their kitchen and poured it over turkey, the only meat they had. Another legend says that mole comes from the Aztecs, and that Moctezuma- the Aztec King- served it to Cortez and the conquistadors believing they were gods (boy, was he wrong!). Regardless of its origins, mole is a well-known, traditional dish served generally during holidays and special occasions.

Today, I treated myself to a nice restaurant famous for this dish, and I was not disappointed! In fact, I think this is the best mole I’ve ever had. Sorry, Mom! It was served over a tender chicken breast and came with a side of Mexican red rice and warm home-made corn tortillas. I devoured it in 7 minutes, tops.

I am impressed, and I give it 5 stars!
