I can’t believe I’ve already been in Puebla for 5 weeks! Time has flown by, and I’ve loved getting to know this beautiful city and working with Yo’on Ixim.
I’m going to miss the team that welcomed me with open arms (Marú, Francisco, Alma and Marisol), the inspirational women who’ve have taught me so much about courage and determination (Angelina, Susana, Isabela, Amalia, Nayeli, Liliana and Maria) and the loving children who stole my heart.
Although I could stay in Puebla another 6 weeks, it’s time to start planning my next move. I am super excited to head to Oaxaca next Saturday and explore “one of Mexico’s most captivating.. and culturally rich” states, as explained by Lonely Planet. I’ll probably be in Oaxaca City for about 2 weeks since there is so much to see and do.
The trip to Oaxaca from Puebla is about 4 1/2 hours, and I’ll take a daytime bus. I already booked a room on Airbnb for the first week for $10.50 a night near the city center! I also started writing down the names of non-profit organizations that work to advance women’s rights. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to volunteer with any of them, but I hope I can learn more about their efforts and meet some of the women they work with (fingers crossed!).
I’m 2013 when I backpacked through South America, I was traveling at a fairly quick pace because I wanted to see as much as I could. At the age of 24, I had the energy to travel overnight and explore a new city every couple of days. Now, 5 years later, I appreciate taking my time- even if that means not seeing as much as I’d like. Don’t get me wrong, I still feel young and am hungry to see the world! I’m simply savoring every new city a little more this time around. 🙂
