Today was one of my favorite days in Puebla! Before heading to a workshop to learn how to make notebooks, the women of Yo’on Ixim and I stopped by a beautiful park for a quick snack. Some of the women had their smallest children with them, so we went to a lake to see the ducks. The kids were in awe! Their eyes lit up and they chased after the ducks and geese fearlessly. It was such a beautiful moment, especially because many of the women said they hadn’t spent a lot of time in parks. I loved seeing the kids point and repeat “pato, pato!”

After observing the ducks and geese, we walked to a playground where the kids got on a slide for the first time! They were terrified, but then some of the women and I also slid down to show the kids how fun it was! We acted silly and laughed with one another. I was so happy to experience that moment with them and see the women smiling from ear to ear.
Sometimes, the language and cultural differences make it hard for me to communicate with the women, but today smiles and laughs spoke louder than words.
