Old Speck and Baldpate! Ahhhhh gorgeous!!! I was planning to zero today but the weather was good so I lit out in the AM. 15 miles and two amazing mountains. Baldpate with its dome of exposed rock and Speck with a huge observation tower on top where I got my first view of THE WHITE MOUNTAINS! Towering 5- and 6-thousand footers way off in the distance. These are some of the toughest climbs on the trail, and I hit them almost immediately upon entering New Hampshire. Intimidated but excited!
Ended the day late, with the sun setting around 8:30 and getting an entire shelter on Speck Pond to myself. Mahoosuc Arm (the steepest single mile on the trail) and Mahoosuc Notch (the most technical mile on the trail) tomorrow. The forecast says rain, but I’ll be riding the high from today’s good weather.
