August 10

Wow wow wow wow. It was worth the wait. Woke up at 4000 feet today completely in the clouds. No visibility whatsoever, but I knew that the forecast predicted a clear day for the summits. Hung around camp waiting for the clouds to go, but at 8:30, I had to get going or else I might get to my Mizpah Hut too late to do a work-for-stay.

Now when I say clouds, I mean all-encompassing, can’t-see-20-feet-in-front-of-you clouds. Got back to the AT – clouds. Walked for a bit – clouds. Summited Jefferson – clouds. On my way to Clay – WHOOSH! The clouds blew out right in front of me, revealing Clay and a towering Washington in the background. I could see for miles the path that I would take over each of the peaks.

And that’s how it was for the rest of the day. Clear skies and the most amazing hike of the trip over 10 miles of exposed ridge line above 5000 feet.

I got into Mizpah Hut, did some chores, and in exchange got an amazing meal along with the floor to sleep on. I just spent some time laying down outside looking up at the stars in the clearest sky I’ve seen in a long time.
