Tuesday, July 24 “Trail Magic” (Kreg)

A beautiful day! Slightly cloudy, and I got to climb Little Bigelow. I just love the views. I try to stop for a bit at each one, remembering that Maine is one of the most beautiful states on the trail. Swim every beach, take in every view. I see a lot of Nobos coming through who are understandably very tired and don’t really take in the sights anymore. They want to finish the trail and head home. While I’m sure the miles will wear on me, I want to stay a hopeless romantic for as long as possible. (Not sure if that term applies here, but it seemed fitting.)

In other news, I got my first TRAIL MAGIC today!!! People called Trail Angels will leave food, water, drinks, even beer (god I hope someone leaves beer somewhere) at random places on the trail. This trail magic was from kids at a summer camp in Maine, and they left fresh fruit at the foot of the mountain – apples, oranges, grapes, and cucumbers (the lone vegetable in the cooler). They also had a card, in which I signed my trail name, date of departure, and hometown. Even better, they were up on the mountain, so I got to thank them in person as I got closer to the top. Kiddos were grinning from ear to ear.

Back was feeling good today. Hopeful for tomorrow. Avery Peak, Bigelow West, and the South Horn coming up, and then a descent to the highway, where I’ll hopefully be able to hitch a ride into Stratton. Back in Monson, I stuck a thumb out to save myself a four mile walk into town. The FIRST car going by stopped and picked us up! So far, the people of Maine are all right in my book!
