I crossed the Kennebec! It is the largest crossing on the AT, and there is a ferry operator who shuttles people across. The ferry, of course, is just a three person canoe. There have been signs for the last 100 miles warning people not to ford it (swim across it). There have been several drownings in recent years, which is why the MATC now provides the ferry service. It was also cool because it was in the pouring rain!
Today was my first day of hiking in the rain. It was warm, though, and wearing my rain jacket is like being in a pressure cooker, so I just hiked as usual. My quick dry shorts and shirt make it easy, and it actually felt nice given the heat. I also slipped a number of times. The trail is rocky and has tons of roots through a lot of Maine, so I step much more carefully when everything is wet.
Also, there is a ton of mud! My legs were covered in it, and I didn’t notice until I went to get in my sleeping bag. I had to instead get out and rinse off in the lake (isn’t it cool that there’s almost always a huge lake right next to me?).
Up and over Little Bigelow tomorrow!
